Diet Coke launched in 1982 and got the Spencerian script — the same flourish Coca-Cola has used since 1886, borrowed intact for a product that didn't exist yet. Red, white, and a silver band, on a matchbox small enough to disappear in a coat pocket. Almost nothing in American graphic design has held its shape this long.
